Respite care: What is adult daycare?

While many older people want to age in place, it can be difficult for family members to be able to coordinate care for their aging loved ones who need supervision, such as those with dementia. In some communities, adult day care can serve as a bridge, allowing family members to continue working their daytime jobs while their loved ones receive structured, supervised care.

Some people are not comfortable with the term adult day care. You may also see these services referred to as adult day services, adult day health care (ADHC), senior day programs, and more broadly, community care.

It's important to note that the specific term used might vary depending on location and the type of services offered by the program.

Here are five important things to know about adult day care for older adults:

Structure and socialization: Adult day care centers offer a structured program with social activities, meals, and oftentimes light exercise or therapy sessions. This provides much-needed social interaction and mental stimulation for seniors, combating loneliness and isolation.

Respite for caregivers:
While older adults enjoy a stimulating environment, adult day care provides much-needed respite for caregivers. It allows them time for work, errands, or simply a break to recharge and prevent burnout.

Levels of care:
Adult day care centers can cater to various needs. Some offer basic supervision and social activities, while others provide more intensive medical care or therapies for individuals with specific conditions.

Cost and insurance
: The cost of adult day care can vary depending on location, level of care, and duration of attendance. Some insurance plans may offer partial coverage, but it's important to check directly with your provider.

Benefits beyond respite:
Apart from offering a break for caregivers, adult day care can benefit seniors in multiple ways. It can help maintain independence, promote physical and mental well-being, and delay the need for more intensive care settings.
